This evening, be sure not to miss the quintessential Swahili Coast sunsets from Stone Town’s west facing shorelines as the Zanzibari Dhows gracefully glide back to harbour!

It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. One can spend many idle hours just exploring the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways. Amongst the winding alleys, lie bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses, whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors – there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork throughout the city.

Tranquil white beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean’s warm turquoise waters; hints of exotic spices wafting along the refreshing sea breeze; picturesque and humble fishing villages interspersed along its shores; extravagant alleys and bustling bazaars in its old town – such a melodic blend can only be found on The Spice Island. It’s no wonder Zanzibar is the Swahili Coast’s heritage trading centre, one that has for centuries, been embraced with explorers and cultures from far and wide.
